Potash granules are a common and effective form of potassium fertilizer for coconut trees. Unlike the liquid form, granules provide a slow-release, sustained supply of nutrients to the tree over a longer period.
1. Types of Potash Granules
The two most common types of potash granules used for coconut trees are:
- Muriate of Potash (MOP): Also known as Potassium Chloride (KCl), this is the most widely used and cost-effective form of potash. It contains about 60% K₂O (potassium oxide).
- Sulfate of Potash (SOP): Also known as Potassium Sulfate (K₂SO₄), this form is slightly more expensive but is beneficial as it also provides sulfur, another essential nutrient for coconut trees. It contains about 50% K₂O.
- 2. Key Benefits
The benefits of potash granules are similar to those of liquid potash, but with the added advantage of sustained release:
- Consistent Nutrient Supply: The granules dissolve slowly in the soil, providing the tree with a steady supply of potassium over several months. This is ideal for long-term growth and productivity.
- Increased Yield and Nut Size: Potash is essential for the formation of flowers and the development of the fruit. It directly contributes to a higher number of coconuts per bunch and improves their size and weight.
- Enhanced Nut Quality: It increases the kernel thickness and boosts the oil content of the nuts, thereby increasing their commercial value.
- Strengthens the Tree: Potassium improves the tree’s overall vigor, making it more resistant to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses like drought.
3. Application and Dosage
- Application Method: The granules are typically applied in the root zone of the tree.
- First Method :
For 1 acre you can use 150 kg of Granules . Mix this with 200 litres of water . For one tree pour 1.5 litres
Second Method
-
- Create a Basin: Dig a circular basin around the base of the tree. The basin should be about 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6 feet) in diameter for a mature tree, but avoid touching the trunk.
- Spread the Granules: Scatter the recommended amount of potash granules evenly within this basin.
- Mix with Soil: Lightly mix the granules with the topsoil.
- Cover with Topsoil: Cover the granules with a layer of topsoil to prevent them from washing away and to ensure they remain moist for slow dissolution.
- Dosage: The dosage can vary, but a general guideline is:
- For Mature Bearing Trees: Apply 500-600 grams of potash granules per tree per year.
- For Young Non-Bearing Trees: A lower dosage of around 200-300 grams per tree per year is sufficient.
- Frequency: Unlike liquid potash which is applied multiple times, granular potash is typically applied in one or two split doses per year due to its slow-release nature. A common practice is to apply it pre-monsoon and post-monsoon.
4. Timing for Application
- Pre-Monsoon: The best time for the first application is from May to early June, just before the start of the monsoon season. The rain helps the granules dissolve and carry the nutrients down to the root zone.
- Post-Monsoon: A second application can be done from September to October to replenish nutrients that may have been leached away by heavy rains.
